As a student of horticulture you will develop a broad understanding of current and emerging issues confronting horticulturists. Whilst there are theoretical elements included in courses, the nature of the subject implies that there will also be practical components, where you will be required to complete work in an area that is relevant to your major.

Topics you may cover

  • Plant biology and production horticulture: interaction between people, plants and the environment particularly in the fruit and vegetable sectors. Examining production processes and industry and organisation structures
  • Soils and climate: how soil influences plant growth, the physical environment for plant roots and soil organic matter.
  • economics and business: how to commercially run a business from growing and production to marketing including how international markets play a role and supply chain management
  • Pests and disease: identifying and controlling pest and disease.
