The subject of Anatomy is concerned with increasing understanding of the functions and structures in the body. It usually is concerned with the study of human anatomy, but may also include the study of animals. Anatomy is fundamental to all areas of biomedical science and is closely related to areas such as physiology – the study of how biological organisms function.

Anatomy is divided into two main areas of interest

  • Gross anatomy: the study of structures that can be identified by the naked eye when either presented or dissected.
  • Microscopic anatomy: the study of structures on a microscopic scale. This includes studying tissues and cells.
