The Society of Petroleum Engineers Scholarship was established in 2009 by the Society of Petroleum Engineers. The Society supports he worldwide interests of the petroleum industry by providing the means to collect, disseminate and exchange technical information concerning the development of oil and gas resources. It also aims to provide opportunities for individuals to maintain and upgrade their technical competence in these areas. 

In this same spirit, the purpose of this scholarship is to promote student interest in the application of engineering principles to the ongoing development of the oil and gas industry in New Zealand. 

The scholarship consists of a financial award, as well as a summer placement in the oil and as industry. 

In order to be eligible to apply, students must be in their third year of study at the University of Waikato and intend to carry on with postgraduate studies. 

The successful candidate will be chosen based on:

  • academic merit
  • character
  • leadership potential and social skills
  • potential contribution to the oil and gas industry
