The Skinner Fund was established in 1966 in honour of Henry Devenish Skinner and established jointly with the New Zealand Archaeological Association and the Polynesian Society and administered by the Royal Society of New Zealand. Following his death, the fund was substantially increased by funds donated from the Friends of Otago Museum and the Otago Museum Trust Board.

The purpose of the award is to provide financial support for the study of History, Art, Culture, Physical and Social Anthropology of the Maori and other Polynesian peoples.
