The RNZAF requires officers with the qualities of leadership and discipline, combined with an academic background. Depending on where you want to end up in the RNZAF, areas of study include:

  • Engineering Officer: Engineering Degree - majoring in Mechanical, Electrical, Aeronautical or Mechatronics.
  • Logistics and Human Resource Officers: Commerce, Business Management or Arts Degrees - majoring in Supply Chain Management, Business Administration or Accounting.
  • Aircrew Officers: Degrees in Aviation Management, Science or Commerce.
  • Specialist Officers: We will consider applicants on a case-by-case basis for undergraduate and postgraduate sponsorship in specialist fields such as teaching, psychology, medicine, information technology and civil engineering. (Ask you RNZAF Recruiter for more information)
  • Communications & Information Systems Officers: Degree to be confirmed.

In order to apply to the RNZAF:

  • you must be at least 17 years of age on the date of enlistment
  • have achieved 90 credits in NCEA Level three and a minimum of 18 credits on English and Mathematics at Level 2
  • Have New Zealand citizenship

If you satisfy the criteria for applying, you will attend an interview with a Recruiting Officer, where you will discuss you application and complete a medical and security questionnaire. Suitable candidates will be required to attend an Officer and Aircrew Selection Board for up to four days at the expense of the of the RNZAF during which time you will be asked to demonstrate you suitability as an Officer.

Successful candidates will have their fees paid and a living allowance provided with an offer to work during the holidays on an Air Force Base.

After graduation, candidates will be able to begin their Air Force full-time career.
