The John Tapiata Scholarship was established in 1992 to acknowledge the contribution of John Tapiata as the first Tumuaki of Te Ara Poutama and his passion for excellence in Te Reo Maori.

The scholarship aims to offer financial assistance to a student who has been accepted into a certificate, diploma, undergraduate or postgraduate degree programme within Te Ara Poutama.

In order to be eligible to apply, applicants must:

  • Have been accepted into a certificate, undergraduate or postgraduate degree programme within Te Ara Poutama
  • Be New Zealand citizens or permanent residents
  • Supported by community leaders, groups, organisations or schools on the basis of their leadership qualities

The Scholarship covers full tuition fees and learner services levy fee for one year of full-time study.
