Is it a good idea to do gap year before I study?
I really like the idea of going overseas and working/traveling for about a year before I go to uni. Is this a good idea? I'm worried that I'll be behind everyone else when I get back.

Some people choose to go traveling after high school and before uni, while others go after getting their degree. To be honest, it's up to you! As for worrying about being 'behind' at uni, I think you'll find that people of all ages are studying and one year won't make a difference.
If you are really worried, you could always go on your OE for half a year. That way you should be able to start at uni in semester 2 (providing that your chosen institution and programme offers courses starting in semester 2).
Hope this helps,
