Three-Year Horticulture Apprenticeship - Auckland Botanic Gardens

·        Three years' fixed term position

·        Based at Auckland Botanic Gardens

Do you want to work at one of New Zealand's Award winning and Qualmark accredited Botanic Gardens?

If you're ready for a new challenge, a new career in horticulture, and can contribute to a great team environment - look no further.  Auckland Botanic Gardens is home to over 10,000 plants from both here in New Zealand and around the world.  It's a great place to work - where both people and their ideas are encouraged to grow.

This is an amazing opportunity to gain paid hands-on experience resulting in an acknowledged qualification - a Level 4 Advanced National Certificate in Amenity Horticulture; backed with experience that will leverage your career in horticulture in a way that traditional studies cannot compare.  At the end of the three-year apprenticeship you will be a capable and qualified gardener and horticulturist.

The team at Auckland Botanic Gardens ensure their plant collections are cultivated and maintained to the highest standards of presentation and reflect the principle aims of a botanic garden: conservation, education, research and recreation. So you'll be learning from and working alongside some of the best people within the horticultural industry.  You'll have an opportunity to work within a variety of areas within the Botanic Gardens, but primarily assisting the collection curators and gardeners in the cultivation and maintenance of the plant collections and amenity gardens, as well as supporting the team with their day-to-day operations.

Whilst gaining all that experience, you'll be trained on the maintenance and operation of a variety of machinery and tools of the trade. You'll also be trained in the practice of outdoor first aid whilst completing a Growsafe certificate.  In your third year, you'll get to apply and take part in the 'Young Amenity Horticulturist of the Year' competition and maybe progress to 'Young Horticulturist of the Year'.  What a journey and what way to start a new career!

To be successful in this position, you'll have a passion for plants as well as some basic horticultural knowledge and practical experience. You'll need a clean, full NZ driver's licence (manual driving skills are desirable).  You must be physically active, and be able to handle manually shifting often heavy loads and be willing to working outside in often trying weather conditions.

Please note that the actual title of this role is horticultural trainee.
