Why did you choose this course?
I always really enjoyed sciences at school, and wanted to utilise this passion in a way that would help people and make a difference to the lives of others.
What do you enjoy about your course?
Medicine is an extremely diverse course, involving multiple scientific disciplines. I appreciate the range of scientific knowledge that I am gathering, as well as the obvious clinical relevance behind it all. Furthermore, medicine is not solely centered around science - it has a strong focus on personal development and one's ability to communicate well with others, and ultimately be able to provide the best of care. Overall, I thoroughly enjoy the multidisciplinary approach to learning that medicine provides.
What will help you successfully complete your course?
Medicine is a course that requires you to constantly manage and understand the workload. The contact hours are far higher than many other degrees, and the amount of out of class learning that is required is huge. I need to actively keep on top of things in order to succeed in the exams at the end of the year.
What advice do you have for future students?
It is often extremely competitive to get into a course such as Medicine, and the first year of health sciences is very stressful and demanding. My advice for aspiring medical students is to be 100% sure that medicine is what you truly want to do, and when you are sure of this to put in the hard yards in order to get there. Acceptance is difficult, however, hard work and perseverance will get you there in the end!
