About Us:

NZIQS is the leading professional body for quantity surveyors with over 1700 members. We provide networking, career development and registration for our members.  We also advocate on behalf of the industry and provide accreditation of education for quantity surveyors.

The construction industry in NZ continues to be strong with a thriving residential building sector in Auckland and the ongoing reconstruction of Christchurch city.  Quantity surveyors are an integral part of this industry.

Career prospects are very positive and according to MBIE forecasts, employment prospects for quantity surveyors are estimated to grow 3.8% per year out to 2018 and then 3.2% per year to 2023.

Quantity surveyors are the construction industry cost specialists who will measure and estimate the cost of resources for all types of building projects.

If you join this exciting and challenging profession you could end up working anywhere in NZ or the world on diverse projects such as bridges, roads, and tunnels; buildings from major projects like hospitals and high-rises; whole houses or bathrooms and kitchens.

Your tasks could also include preparing tenders and tender documentation; managing contract cost through to final account; valuing for insurance and/or asset life planning purposes, rental reviews, maintenance and tax schedules; assisting with adjudication, litigation and arbitration processes and as expert witnesses; and performing many management roles in construction-related activities.

You will need to be able to think logically and analytically to solve problems. You will also need ‘people’ skills as well—being a good communicator with negotiation and relationship management skills.

Mostly, you will have a passion for building and construction.

If you wish to commence studying towards becoming a quantity surveyor, there are two paths that you can take.  You can either gain a National Diploma in Quantity Surveying (NDQS) or one of two Bachelor’s Degrees in Quantity Surveying.
