What are you studying?
Bachelor of Communication Studies at Auckland University of Technology.
Why did you choose this course?
I first heard about Communications through a career advisor at high school, and didn't really think much of it at the time. However when the time came to decide where to study and after some research I thought it sounded exactly like what I needed for my preferred career path. AUT provided the best course in New Zealand so I moved to Auckland and here I am!
What do you enjoy about your course?
I love that within my degree I have so many possible career options and they all fall under the broadcasting and media industry, which I am really interested in. It is also great that it is broad enough for me to decide my major at the end of my second year and decide as I learn; after experiencing all the different fields - television, radio, advertising, journalism, digital media, creative industries and public relations.
What will help you successfully complete your course?
I think having work experience is vital to doing well for my future career and therefore getting involved in the media/broadcasting industry while studying, I think, would really help you understand what it's like. It would also help to determine whether or not you want to do what you're studying – work experience is key to figuring this out. For example, I adore acting and up here in Auckland I am with an agent. This means I am doing auditions from time to time and trying as much I can to get my name out there, which involves giving everything a go and promoting myself! I also get to experience what it's like on set and this only motivates me more to do well at Uni so I can get where I want to be in the future!
What advice do you have for future students?
Come to class with an open mind and get involved with as much as you can – you never know what might come out of it...
