Hi there,

I am interested in studying to become a Pharmacist, before I commit to anything however, I would like to know what the job is all about. And also where I can study this.

Hi Guy,

Thanks for your question, studying to become a Pharmacist sounds very interesting and will enable you to work in a variety of locations and areas of the medical sector.

In a nutshell, Pharmacists prepare, mix and dispense prescribed medicines. They also give patients advice about their medication and medical conditions, and help ensure patients know how to take their medication properly.

The day-to-day responsibilities of a pharmacist vary depending on where they work. For example, a pharmacist may find himself or herself working in a hospital or nursing home dispensing medications to patients being cared for on premises. Hospital pharmacists are likely to work in collaboration with physicians for in order to find the right medication for a particular patient and making sure that any medication the patient is currently taking does not interfere with any new medication.

Alternatively, community pharmacists typically work in retail pharmacies providing prescription medications to the community. Community pharmacists spend a significant portion of their time communicating with and educating customers about how to safely take medication, especially if they are on several different types of medication.

There are 3 main institutions that provide facilities for studying to become a Pharmacist:

  • Otago
  • Auckland
  • Bay of Plenty Polytechnic.

Click here to view what each institution, its a good idea to compare and contrast what each institution has to offer (i.e. structure of their programs, placement opportunities etc).

Hope this helps,
