Spark Live Chat
Post your questions here for the Spark team. They'll be online between 12:45 and 1:30 on Monday the 20th of June to answer them!
Just wanted to know does spark offer roles to students while they are studying at university or offer any roles to students who have just left school?
Do you have any roles suitable for students who are looking at going to uni to study IT?
Most of our roles are full-time. Sometimes we are able to offer roles to school leavers in our stores; the key thing is that you have a strong desire to help people and understanf their needs - any customer service experience is a huge bonus.
We don't generally offer part-time roles, however there may from time to time be roles in our contact centres, and our other brand, Skinny, does employ some students for part-time roles. All of the openings we have at any one time can be found on our careers site: www.careers.sparknz.co.nz - you can register for job alerts as well, so if there's nothing there right now, you'll be notified when something comes up.
Hi Kim. I saw a job ad somewhere for an online live chat customer support person for Spark where you could work from home. Is this job something you could do part time when studying or even while I'm still at school or would that not be enough hours to fill the role?
What kind of subjects would I need to study to be accepted into a grad role at Spark? Do I need a bachelor degree or diploma etc
These roles are generally still full-time roles, or possibly part-time, but need to suit the requirements of the business (ie we need people when customers are phoning us). The exact requirement will always be advertised with the role.
Do you accept the black man in the workplace?
We have so many different career paths in Spark, so I couldn't say what subjects you'd need to study! Being a technology company, a lot of our roles require the relevant qualifications, but we also need people strong in maths (for data science), design (for user experience) and anything to do with the cloud, softwarre development etc. In addition, we have careers for law, finance, HR, communications, marketing etc. I'd do something you enjoy, but make sure that you learn a bit about the technology too....all of the 'standard' careers are going to be impacted more and more by the technology we use. Learn some coding :)
I'm saddened that you even need to ask that question! We fully and wholeheartedly believe in having a diverse workforce and equal opportunities for everyone. We only require that people have the right to work in New Zealand and that they have the neccesary skills and qualifications for the role.
Thanks a bunch for responding to my question! Good to see such acceptance in this beautiful country that I now call my home. Many blessings.
You're welcome Jimmy - in more ways than one! :)
Thanks for hosting this chat.
Wondering if you could provide me some insight into how I get into the spark retail stores. Interested in a career in retail with an element of digital.
Thanks very much.
What kind of attributes do you look for in a potential employee?
All of our roles are posted on the Spark Careers site: www.careers.sparknz.co.nz. As we do receive a number of applications for these roles, the key is to make your application stand out. More and more we ask that people submit a video of themselves for these roles - so make sure it grabs attention as well as answering the 'brief'.
Do you have any apprentiship / cadetship opportunities available for someone looking to go into IT space?
Every role is a little different, and the hiring managers will no doubt look for different things, but some of the key things are that you're curious, and keen to learn new things/ways, that you've worked in a team of some description (even if it's a sports team, debating team etc), that you can relied upon to do what you say you're going to do, and that you absolutely have the interests of our customers at the forefront of anything you do.
