Hi Mainfreight,

How often do you have roles available for school leavers? And where are the majority of these based?

Hi Caitlin,
We have rolling recruitment which means that we are always on the look out for good people! I can't really say numbers as it changes month to month. As Auckland is our biggest centre this is where the majority of our opportunities come up, Christchurch is another one where a lot opportunities arise. Also we do have opportunities that come up in our more regional centres but less frequently.

Hi Sam,
There are so many opportunities for grads within Mainfreight! Mainfreight has 3 divisions, Domestic Transport (moving freight around NZ), Logistics - 3rd party warehousing (we'll store a customers product if they don't have their own facility) and Air and Ocean (import and export of freight).
To give a brief overview with Domestic as an example: we start everyone on the floor for a minimum of a year to get a really good understanding of the operations and their team. Then they move into an office role such as Customer Services to see the office side. From there as opportunities come up you can put your hand up to say you'd like to give them a go this could be in Sales or Operations, or in one of our other divisions. Once you gain more responsibilities you can put yourself forward for leadership roles or in support teams like our Training and Development team or our Supply Chain Team that look at innovative supply chain solutions for our customers.
The sky is the limit here!

Hi Rachel,
When a new team member starts they get on the job training with their new team. We also have a dedicated training facility here at Mainfreight which does all sorts of training from soft skills, induction courses, forkhoist courses, dangerous goods courses to computer systems training.

Hi Rhiannon,
With the nature of our business our people tend to work 10 hour shifts, in the warehouse this could be a morning shift or a nights shift but this also applies to those in office roles as well.

Hi Stanley,
We do have an in-house accounting team, however they have come through the business like the rest of the team. This means that when they started it was on the floor learning the operations, they then moved into other roles and then into their accounting/finance roles. We have a very strong culture of promotion from within so we like to grow and develop our people with an understanding of the nuts and bolts of the business and the opportunity to meet a wide range of our team. This means that we don't fill specialist roles or management roles from outside the business.

Hi Bruce,
We don't have specific engineering roles but we have had engineering students come through our graduate programme. It can be a useful degree in our logistics division which can be quite a science e.g. warehouse layout optimization. Our grads start on the floor so in Logistics this would be picking orders from around the warehouse using a reach truck to get a feel for what the business is all about.
