About Ministry of Primary Industries

Growing and protecting New Zealand is the principle focus of the Ministry of Primary Industries. The primary sector in New Zealand has a vast range of industries; agriculture, food, forestry, fisheries and aquaculture. They all play a firm role in achieving high results for New Zealand economy and biosecurity.

We strive for increasing the awareness of New Zealand’s unique culture through our export of primary sector products. Working with the primary industries, including the Maori means you have a great chance to gain valuable use your innovation to help New Zealand’s growth.

Being the Government’s key advisor on fisheries and aquaculture management is a crucial role. It involves providing policy advice and programmes to support the sustainability of New Zealand’s primary industries. Becoming a part of the MPI means playing a part in constructing and adopting new ideas to adapt the industries to the changing environments and regulations.

The Ministry of Primary Industries serves as a governmental “hub” for the primary sector. It develops and maintains good rapports with all those involved such as farmers, tangata whenua, environmental and non-governmental organisations and the wider community.
