What did you study?
Postgraduate Diploma in Business, majoring in accounting

Why did you choose this course?
The course offers many excellent career possibilities from professional accountants in public practices to Chief Financial Officers in multinational corporates. It provides a good base of general financial knowledge if I want to run my own business.

What did you enjoy about the course?
I studied at AUT and most of my lecturers were highly regarded experts in their fields who had real in-depth commercial experience. I really enjoyed having access to that practical knowledge.

What helped you to successfully complete your course?
Good time management skills. I was working full time while completing my studies. Sometimes it becomes really difficult balancing work, study and life. I found it was easier for me to concentrate on one of these at a time so I could maximise efficiency.

What advice do you have for future students?
My advice would be to choose a course at degree level or above, one that will help you to reach your goals in life. Don’t choose a course you may regret in the future.

My job involves helping clients make informed business decisions. As an analyst in corporate finance, I specialise in providing clients with a full range of services including investigative accounting, valuations, Mergers & Acquisitions financial due diligence, financial modelling and litigation support.  
What do you do on an average day?

On an average day, I could be doing any of the following:

•    Analyse financial information to assess the value of a business
•    Prepare financial models to help clients make informed financing or investment decisions
•    Interact with clients to assist with their needs
•    Research  a business or industry to get a good understanding of  operations, risks and other financial factors
•    Write reports

What is the most exciting aspect of your job?
Gaining insights about how businesses operate and what drives them to success or failure. I also enjoy being able to express my opinion on the value of a business following my research and analysis.

What opportunities does your job offer?
Exposure to a wide range of business issues, practical business solutions, in-depth commercial knowledge and career progression.

What skills, training, education or past experiences helped you secure your job?
I come from an accounting background which has helped me understand how financial information is prepared and presented. This knowledge is very useful in my current role, especially when investigative accounting is required.

Where do you see yourself heading in the future within this industry?
In the medium term, I would like to expand my professional network by building and developing solid relationships in the business community.

What advice do you have for anyone wanting to work in the accounting sector/industry?
Find a supportive employer who offers challenges and opportunities in your role. Work hard, take on responsibilities and don’t underestimate your own opinion.
