What did you study?

I studied a Bachelor of Commerce with a triple endorsement in Human Resources, Strategic Management and Marketing at the University of Canterbury.

Why did you choose this course?

My strengths at school were subjects orientated around business studies- Economics and Accounting. I enjoyed these so believed it would be natural to follow my strengths. I wasn’t entirely sure what career path I wanted to take after school so I knew if I studied commerce it would provide me with a general basis for gaining further business knowledge which I could later transfer into the workplace.

What helped you to successfully complete your course?

I have always been someone who won’t give up- so when I start something I am determined to finish it! I believe this attribute combined with the support of the people around me - my university friends, lecturers and family helped ensure I was on the right track to successfully completing my degree.

What advice do you have for future students?

If you aren’t sure what you want to study- don’t worry you aren’t the only one! Focus on potential career options around your strengths and interests. The degree you initially chose doesn’t have to determine the career path you take- it is common for people to change their choice of degree and remember university isn’t the only option after school. If you are really unsure taking a gap year or doing an internship would help provide extra time to review things.

Describe your job

I work for Fuji Xerox as a ‘Marketing Executive’ – it is a varied role which I love! I am involved with all the marketing initiatives with my key focus being around Education Marketing. I am particularly involved with sponsorship and help organise conferences and celebrity speaking engagements. I work closely with the Strategic team and help manage some of these accounts. I help to manage all marketing aspects of the online experience, including our external website and social media. I am also in charge of notifying our customers of service increases and help administer the bonuses for the support staff within FXNZ. I work with a fantastic group of people and these colleagues help make it enjoyable coming to work every day!

What do you do on an average day?

One of the many things I love about my job is that every day is different. Clearing my inbox is exciting but can be very challenging at times as I discover new and exciting aspects to the job which keeps me constantly learning! I may have meetings to attend, liaise with our profile of celebrity speakers, organise events and conferences, connect with the NGL students, update our website and social media forums, collate market research, work on FSMA processes, update our product and pricing systems, and ensure I meet deadlines in all aspects of my tasks.

What opportunities does your job offer?

I am very lucky to work for a large global enterprise- there is substantial room for internal movement within the company and even within each department. Fuji Xerox has many resources, training and development opportunities available in combination with fantastic managers and mentors which you can learn and grow from. Fuji Xerox is a strong, kind and interesting company, which is reinforced by the diverse people, the benefits provided and the positive culture created. Through my role I have met some amazing inspirational people and am even lucky enough to work closely with some of them so my personal network is constantly expanding. I try to take every opportunity I can- this way I can expand my knowledge base, challenge myself with unfamiliar circumstances and extend both my personal and professional abilities and boundaries.

What skills, training, education or past experiences helped you secure your job?

I believe a key contributor would be my work ethic- I am always prepared to work over and beyond what is required. I have always worked through my school and university life as this has allowed me to strengthen my interpersonal and communication skills. Having worked in different environments has made me more adaptable and has thrown unexpected challenges at me which has made me a stronger individual which I can translate into the work place/environment. I ask a lot of questions and believe having good listening skills play an integral part in being successful!

Where do you see yourself heading in the future within this industry?

I love working for a well-recognised international company which provides huge growth potential and I feel honoured to have had the experiences and learnt what I have within Fuji Xerox. Working within a marketing environment, especially sponsorship has opened my eyes to a career path I hadn’t really considered. Working in a successful innovative company which is growing is really exciting to be a part of.  As a global company the potential to be able to transfer and live abroad at a later stage could always be an option.

What advice do you have for anyone wanting to work in the professional services industry?

A balance in life is important so make sure you work hard but also enjoy it along the way. Always put your all into everything you do and don’t give up even when at times it can be tough- you will face challenges but these will help you grow and develop as an individual. Good luck for what your future holds and never be afraid to ask questions!
