What did you study? Bachelor of Business Analysis (Financial) at the University of Waikato.
Why did you choose this course? I knew I wanted to work in business and the world-class Waikato Management School was a great first step in my career. Also, it meets the academic requirements for further study toward my chartered accountancy with CAANZ.
What did you enjoy about your course? I think it is important to keep options open when you’re starting out in your career. I enjoyed being able to study a broad range of subjects and getting a taste of the different aspects of business while also specialising in accounting.
What helped you to successfully complete your course? Having people in my life that were a few steps ahead of me in the career I wanted who acted as “career mentors” for me. These people helped inspire me to work hard and aim high. Also, having the support of friends and family helped keep me on track as uni life can get hard at times and comes with a lot of distractions!
What advice do you have for future students? Once you know it’s the career for you, it’s never too soon to start looking into what you want to do after uni. Accounting firms are great at offering internships and work experience while you’re still at school or at uni. Exploring these opportunities helped secure a job for me once I finished my degree.

What is your job? I work as a consultant in Tax and Private.
What do you do on an average day? I mostly work on compliance for small businesses. I prepare financial statements and tax returns for a range of different types of client businesses.
What is the most exciting about your job? The variety of clients I get to work with, understanding their unique challenges and being a part of the process that finds the solution. I like to know I’ve helped someone.
What opportunities does your job offer? I really value the high quality training that Deloitte provides. Being a large firm, I am able to learn a wide range accounting tools and different client industries that will be beneficial for my career in accounting. At the moment, I am studying towards my Chartered Accountancy with CAANZ through Deloitte. Also, as Deloitte is the biggest accounting firm in the world so there are opportunities to work overseas.
What skills, training, education or past experiences helped you secure your job? My degree was essential for ensuring I understood the technical side of my job. However, personal development is just as key. Working in customer focused roles such as retail and hospitality during university was hugely helpful because I was able to develop useful skills such as customer service and effective communication.
Where do you see yourself heading in the future within this industry? In the short-term, moving into a senior role with more client focus appeals to me. I’d also love to work overseas and gain accounting and tax experience in other jurisdictions.
What advice do you have for anyone wanting to work in the professional services industry? Having a good attitude goes a long way. Start saying yes to things and it’s amazing the effect it has. People will stop offering opportunities if you turn them down too many times. You never know what you are capable of until you try.
