What did you study?

After graduating from Lincoln University with a Bachelor of Commerce with a major in Hotel Management I joined Accor as part of the Graduate Management Trainee Programme. Having worked three years part time while studying in a shoe store I had a good idea of what it took to deliver great customer service. However, being completely new to the hospitality industry I had a lot to learn operationally and the GMT programme was the perfect opportunity for me to do this. Once accepted into the programme I was placed at Mercure Wellington. Starting in housekeeping and rotating through all departments and roles gave me fantastic exposure and a greater understanding of the hotel operation. In addition to working full time, as a GMT you are also given projects such as secretary of the Health and Safety and/or Sustainability Committees, organising the Christmas party and leading fundraising initiatives.

What did you enjoy about your course?

The experience that I gained from my Graduate Management Traineeship was invaluable. To learn the ins and outs of every department from front line to back of house in a 12 month timeframe, you would be hard pressed to find a better opportunity than this! I learnt so much and gained many important life skills that would benefit me both professionally and personally.

Describe your job

Where am I now? After completing my GMT I was transferred to the newly opened Novotel Auckland Airport where I started as a Human Resources Administrator and later Human Resources Coordinator and Assistant to the General Manager.  After 9 amazing months in Auckland I was then moved to Queenstown where I am now the Human Resources Coordinator for Both Mercure Queenstown Resort and Mercure Dunedin.
