Waiter/Waitress

Waiters and waitresses serve food and drinks in restaurants, hotels, clubs or other eating-places. In recent times, there has been a move away from differentiating waiters from waitresses and less gendered terms have been introduced, such as ‘server’ or ‘waitperson’.

A server’s role involves greeting people when they are seated at their table. They take customers’ orders, inform them about specials and answer questions about the menu. Therefore, good servers will know about how the kitchen staff prepares meals. After they have taken orders, the server will give the orders to kitchen staff and let them know when a table has finished each course to ensure customers’ meals flow. Depending on whether their restaurant employs a sommelier, a server may also need to know about which wines pair well with certain dishes.
