Stevedore

Stevedores operate a variety of heavy machinery to load, unload, tally and stow the cargo of a ship. The word ‘stevedore’ has been used since the 1700s. It comes from the Spanish word estibador, which is derived from estibar – “to stow”. Usage of this word spread around the world through sailors and it is still used today.

Stevedores use dock equipment, such as cranes and forklifts, to move cargo. This can be a hazardous job, so stevedores must look out for each other and be aware of the rapidly changing conditions on the docks.
