Sound Operator (Radio/Film/Television) » Overview

Sound Operator (Radio/Film/Television)

Sound operators record sound for radio, film, television or other media. Essentially, they are in charge of the sound in media, including sound effects, dialogue and music.

Within film and television, sometimes sound is not captured in the way that that director intended. Therefore, the sound operator may need to reproduce sounds artificially. The sound operator will create a sound that captures the ambiance the director is going for, and this is later edited into the film, television or radio show. Sometimes dialogue is not clear, therefore the sound operator will ask actors to recite their lines in a studio to record a cleaner recording.

Sound recorders may also deal with the music for a media project. Depending on the project, this may involve working with composers to create music to fit a scene, or finding the right songs to be purchased for the project.
