Short order cooks prepare, cook and serve simple dishes that can be prepared quickly. For this reason, they usually work in eating-place where food is served quickly, such as fast food restaurants, diners, bars or cafes. Essentially, places where speedy service is key. Some short order cooks have formal training; however, it is not uncommon for people new to the job to receive on-the-job training from experienced cooks.

Typically, short order cooks prepare items on a grill, although they also use a stove in the preparation of some menu items. The work is very fast-paces and they spend a lot of time on their feet in hot conditions. Therefore, people short order cooks must be able to juggle several task at once and able to work quickly.
