Retail salespeople help customers pick out goods, and collect payment for purchases. They do not need a lot of training and may specialise in selling a certain item, such as electronics, books or clothes. They usually work indoors in shops, using the till and cleaning, stocking and re-packing items. Their job involves regular interaction with customers, so they need to be good at dealing with people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures.

Most retail salespeople are knowledgeable about their stock and helpful when it comes to customer enquiries and complaints. They may need patience in helping customers find exactly the right product or service for them and may have to stand on their feet for long periods of time. In the holidays, many retail salespeople work long hours. They may be require to advise customers on care of a product and how to use it.
