Pathologist » Overview

Pathologists are doctors who study human diseases and conditions, the effects of diseases and injury on the body, and the effects of treatment. Essentially, pathology is the study of blood, fluid and tissue samples. Pathologists make diagnoses of illness based on specific factors that are lacking or present in these samples. It is a very important part of the medical field, as many diseases are diagnosed or ruled out by microscopic and laboratory analysis of samples.

Pathologists can choose to specialise in a certain area of the field, including

  • Surgical pathology: evaluate body samples, such as a tumour, in order to diagnose illness.
  • Molecular pathology: biopsy whole cells and cell components to look for illness.
  • Forensic pathology: perform autopsies to determine cause of death, information that is helpful to criminal investigators who determine possible criminal involvement in a person’s death.
