Orthotist/Prosthetist » Overview

Orthotists and prosthetists are healthcare professionals who specialize in assisting patients who are partially, or completely missing a limb. More specifically, orthotists make braces or devices to aid or correct skeletal injuries or problems, while prosthetists make artificial limbs for those who have suffered amputations through illness or injury. They must meet with clients to assess their needs and abilities; for example, range of motion, muscle development and condition of the skin where the device will be attached. In each case, a custom device is created to ensure maximum comfort and support. For this reason, orthotists and prosthetists need to make sure that they take detailed measurements and that their work is accurate.
