Oncologist » Overview

Oncologists diagnose, treat and care for patients with cancer. They are fully trained in the various types of cancer and the best forms of treatment for each. However, it is not uncommon for an oncologist to specialise in a particular type of cancer.

An oncologist is trained to make diagnoses. They know the symptoms of cancer and the tests to conduct in order to make an accurate diagnosis. Once a diagnosis is made, an oncologist will make recommendations as to the best form of treatment, whether that is an individual treatment or a combination of approaches.

Cancer and cancer treatment is widely researched, and new information is produced regularly. It is the responsibility of the oncologist to make sure that they keep up to date with any advancement.
