Merchandise Manager » Learn More

It is the job of the merchandise manager to keep on top of trends. This entails attending conferences and trade shows both nationally and overseas, keeping up with pop culture and any consumer research involving the target customer. Based on their research, the merchandise manager places orders for the store and make decisions about quantity and the timing of deliveries. As deliveries arrive, the merchandise manager must arrange them in innovative ways that are designed at increasing sales volume.

Merchandise managers may have assistants that are responsible for certain categories, stores or bands. Brand/category managers generally assist the merchandise manager by generating data on sales trends in their departments. This allows managers to make informed decisions about restocking and product expansion.
