Mental Health Nurse

Mental health nurses are qualified nurses who specialise in providing treatment, care and support for patients with moderate to severe mental health problems. They are interested in patients’ physical wellbeing, as well as their emotional and psychological wellbeing. Mental health nurses are employed in mental hospitals, clinics and public hospitals that offer counselling or mental health services.

As a mental health nurse, you will spend a lot of time with patients, and may spend more one-on-one time with them than doctors. Therefore, it is not uncommon for mental health nurses to be trained as counsellors as well. The level of your training will dictate your responsibilities on the job.

In addition to supporting patients’ mental health, mental health nurses also carry out tasks that nurses in other fields do, such as taking blood pressure, temperature and vital signs. They also often dispense medication to patients and make sure that patients are confortable.
