A maître d is the headwaiter at restaurants, hotels, cafes and other eating-places. They are responsible for overseeing the service of food and beverages to guests and ensuring that the connection between kitchen and dining room runs smoothly. Their responsibilities include checking reservations, greeting guests, supervising waiters and waitresses, and checking bills. Highly trained maître d’s also work as sommeliers, offering advice on the pairing of food and wines. They also deal with customer services issues and act as the face of the restaurant for customers.
