Linguists study the origin, structure, development and use of human language. The field of linguistics is very broad; in fact, the term can be used to refer to anyone who is skilled in some way with a given language.

From an academic perspective, the field of linguistics includes grammar, syntax, semantics, origin and phonetics. Applied linguistics refers to the practical application of knowledge of language, such as translation and interpretation, or speech therapy. Those who are interested in the academic area of linguistics are often teach in universities and are heavily involved in research, dedicating their careers to expanding the field.
