Home aides are very good at working with people, particularly those who need extra assistance to conduct their day-to-day lives.  They enjoy helping people and have the patience to deal with a variety of challenging situations.

Responsibilities

Home Aides may do some or all of these things:

  • Visit clients in their homes
  • Follow instructions from clients and home support supervisors about the help needed
  • Housework such as cleaning, washing and ironing
  • Give personal care to clients such as helping them to shower and dress
  • Buy food and other goods
  • Look after children or pets
  • Assist nurses or other support people
  • Be on call to offer support to their clients
  • Stay overnight at their client’s premises
  • Give friendly support to clients
  • Observe and report any household problems
  • Prepare or warm meals.

Skills

Home Aides need to have:

  • Good listening, communication and people skills
  • Practical skills
  • First aid skills
  • Skills in practical housekeeping, budgeting and self-care

Personal Attributes

Home Aides need to be:

  • Mature, responsible and honest
  • Positive, caring and compassionate
  • Non-judgemental
  • Discrete and reliable
  • Able to use initiative and think quickly in emergencies
  • Organised
  • Able to follow instructions
  • Fit and healthy with strong backs, as some heavy lifting may be required, such as lifting clients in or out of wheelchairs

Knowledge

Home Aides need sound knowledge of these subjects:

  • Health and safety issues, such as the storage of dangerous goods
  • The needs of the elderly, families, children and people with disabilities, as some clients may have complex care needs
  • English and some basic maths.
