Health and Safety Inspector/ Officer » Entry Pathways

To become a health and safety inspector you need to have a Health and Safety Inspector's Warrant from the Department of Labour. To get this you need to train with the department and pass a range of exams, which can take 12 months or more to complete. Your warrant must then be renewed every three years.

To be taken on for health and safety training, the Department of Labour prefers you to have a trade or technical background such as building or electrical work. It is also useful to have a tertiary qualification in an area relevant to occupational health and safety, such as:

  • occupational health/hygiene
  • health and safety management
  • a relevant science-related subject such as biology or chemistry
