Funeral Director/Embalmer » Overview

Funeral Director/Embalmer

Funeral directors/embalmers organise and direct funerals and hygienically prepare human bodies for burial, cremation or visitation by families. They may work for others or own their own business. Because they deal with grieving people everyday, they need to enjoy working with people in difficult circumstances and have a degree of empathy. Some funeral directors are also ministers of religion but some are business managers, overseeing the funeral process and organising memorial plaques, tombstones and burial grounds as well as performing cremations and burials.

They may be required to speak in public at times and to look after business administration. Funeral directors may work indoors and sometimes in cemeteries or crematoriums. They may work alongside ministers, grieving loved ones, insurers, florists, musicians and provide some support to families of the deceased. Embalmers work with dead bodies on a regular basis, so it’s not a job for the squeamish!
