Food Technologist

Food technologists research new food and beverage products, and develop ways to produce and improve the quality of these products. Essentially, they are experts in science and engineering theory and practices. Some food technologists work in laboratories to investigate the physical and chemical properties of food. Others are employed by processing plants to develop new ways for food and beverages to be produced. This may involve, developing or improving the processing, packaging and storage of food. It may also include developing better quality control programmes and distribution methods, or developing government health and safety standards for food and beverage. Food technologists are responsible for determining the best temperature at which a specific food item should be stored, as well as testing and making recommendations for how our food could be healthier and with a higher nutritional value.
