Dental assistants usually enjoy working with people in a caring role, as well as working in administration, preparing the dental surgery to make it comforting and professional for patients who visit.

Dental Assistants may do some or all of the following

  • greet and prepare patients for treatment
  • mix materials for fillings
  • clean and prepare instruments
  • pass instruments and materials to the dentist as required
  • develop x-rays
  • keep the surgery and waiting room clean, tidy and ready to receive patients
  • make moulds of patients' teeth
  • perform reception and clerical duties, such as ordering dental and office supplies.

Dental Assistants need to have

  • the ability to use and care for dental equipment, including sterilisation procedures
  • the ability to follow instructions
  • good people and communication skills
  • good organisational skills
  • basic computer skills.

Dental Assistants need to be

  • friendly and polite
  • caring
  • good at listening to others
  • quick and efficient
  • able to work well under pressure
  • able to remain calm in emergencies
  • health and safety conscious
  • able to follow instructions.

Dental Assistants need knowledge of

  • dental surgery procedures, including the use of sedatives and anaesthetics
  • dentistry and hygiene
  • dental practises to be able to anticipate the needs of the dentist
  • dental materials and vocabulary
