Customs Officer

Customs officers are employed by the government to control, monitor and administer the entry and departure of goods, vessels and people to and from New Zealand. They work to enforce laws at ports of entry into the country, such as airports and seaports. Their work involves inspecting cargo and baggage for prohibited items and they also collect funds for taxable imported goods.

In order to be a good customs officer you must be able to deal with many different types of people. You will also be a representative of the New Zealand government, so you will have to maintain a professional demeanour, even when responding to difficult customers.

You will also have to have a sharp eye for contraband such as illegal drugs and weapons. However, contraband also includes fresh fruit, which may sound mundane, but is equally important. Customs officers help ensure that foreign diseases and pests do not negatively impact our environment and our industries.
