Clinical Coder

Clinical coders analyse information about diseases, injuries and procedures in patient discharge records and translate them into health classification codes.

On a day-to-day basis a clinical coder codes the diagnoses made so that the patient, or their medical insurance provider is billed correctly. These codes may also be used to help write policy, monitor performance and produce health statistics.

Coders should have a firm understanding of medical terminology, as well as knowledge of diseases, conditions and treatments, as this will help them in finding the correct code. After all, if a coder makes a mistake, the patient will be billed incorrectly! Therefore, clinical coders must have a high attention to detail.
