Civil Engineer » Overview

Want to be someone who can say ‘see that bridge crossing the harbour over there? I designed it.’ If your answer is yes, then definitely choose Civil Engineering to create solid foundations for your career path.
Civil Engineer

Civil engineers plan, design and supervise the construction and repair of infrastructure such as buildings, roads, bridges, tunnels, dams, water systems, wastewater treatment plants and wharves. So it all may sound simple enough in explanation, but when you really think about it, how is something like the Auckland Harbour Bridge built so that it can take thousands of tonnes of weight, every day, for over 50 years? Civil engineering provides the answer to that.

Without civil engineering, the world wouldn’t have the man-made structures it does today, as pretty much anything that is built requires some level of engineering to ensure it is safe and able to carry out the purpose for which it was designed and constructed.

On a daily basis, generalist civil engineers will work closely with surveyors and specialist personal on projects with specific sites and terrain, designing grading, drainage, pavements, water supplies, sewer services, electricity and communication utilities and whatever else is required for the function of the structure.

The great thing about civil engineering is that there is never a day that is the same, and the vast array of specialisations means you can choose what area of expertise you would like to focus on in the future if you have your heart set on something specific.

Almost every day you hear about amazing new heights and creations designed by civil engineers. And as the human race continues to strive for bigger, better, faster and stronger, an engineer has an important role to play in terms of making these things happen, all while ensuring it meets safety, environmental, mechanical and functioning specifications.

Complex and challenging, but rewarding and exciting, civil engineering is not a job for the faint-hearted, but for someone who has a great imagination and the determination to see it turn into reality for the improvement of society.
