Atmospheric Scientist

Atmospheric scientists study the Earth’s atmosphere – the layer of gases that surrounds the planet and enables life on Earth. Atmospheric scientists are interested in the climate and all other aspects of the atmosphere. They may also study the atmosphere of other planets.

The field is very broad, and for this reason the actual work conducted by an atmospheric scientist can vary greatly. It can involve anything from developing weather forecasts to research on preventing degradation of the Earth’s atmosphere (i.e., the ozone hole). However, the most common role of the atmospheric scientist is meteorologist – focusing on atmospheric phenomena such as weather. Meteorology is a well-known field of atmospheric science, as many news channels, newspapers and the government agencies employee meteorologists.
