Acupuncturist » Overview

Acupuncturists are health care providers who use alternative procedures which originated in China over two thousand years ago.

Acupuncturists treat patients using the philosophies of traditional Chinese medicine and through therapies including needle acupuncture, the heating of acupuncture points (moxibustion), and tuina (a form of massage).

Acupunctural procedures stimulate anatomical points of the body by penetrating the skin with thin, metallic needles that are manipulated by hand or electrical stimulation. Scientific research indicates that stimulation by needles at acupuncture points releases hormones called endorphines in the brain, blocking pain.

Most people who visit acupuncturists are treated for headache pain, asthma, or arthritis. However, acupuncture is also helpful in treating conditions such as addiction, stroke rehabilitation, menstrual cramps, tennis elbow, lower-back pain and carpel tunnel syndrome.
